Definitely the best cartoon from the otherwise very weak 90`s animationwise. Heavily inspired by the Batman movies by Tim Burton, Batman The Animated Series was the ultimate incarnation of Batman.

Visually distinctive and stunning, but also good story telling set it apart from other cartoons from the 90s.

Batman Gotham Knights (aka The New Batman Adventure) In 1998 Batman TAS continued with a new show name and also a redesign on all the characters. These new adventures took place a few years after the last episode of Batman TAS. Hence Dick Grayson is now Nightwing and in his place Tim Drake is the new Robin. Also Batgirl is regular cast member now.

DVD Information
Even though Batman TAS had been released on dvd, these were all lose dvd volumes containg a few episodes and not in chronologial order. In 2004 Batman TAS finally got a worthy release in the form of season box sets on region 1. The wait is now when region 2 also gets all season boxed sets. Region 1 DVD

Only the first two volumes have been released on region 2 DVD thus far. No known information at this point when the final two boxes will be released.

If you like Batman The Animated Series, and especially its cool design, you should definitely pick up this book by Chip Kidd and Paul Dini.
It`s full of preproduction work including various preliminary sketches by Bruce Timm amongst others and finished work, along with a recap of all produced episodes and the opening titles for all the episodes.
